Sounds like you’re only getting foremilk and not the fatty hind milk, check babies nappies. If it’s green or frothy it’ll be an indicator that there’s not enough of the fatty milk. As previous comment says your supply doesn’t regulate properly till 12-16 weeks, it varies from person to person. Are you breastfeeding too or just pumping? And how long are you pumping for? Usually takes 10-15 mins to get the nice fatty stuff as well x
hi both, I’m exclusively pumping, hence the group.. but he has formula top ups. My goal is to stop eventually as mentioned in original post. I’m not concerned about supply dropping etc, as that is the goal, slowly but surely. All 3 pumps are 30 mins and completely empty me so it’s not fore / hind milk etc.
@Rebecca might just be the drop in pumps has resulted in slightly different milk? If you leave in fridge, the milk should separate over time to show how much hind milk is in it. Sometimes mine is still quite watery and clear, usually if I’m run down but I find when it separates it still has fatty bits. If baby is getting top ups with formula should be all good!
You might find this interesting from the la lèche league: https://laleche.org.uk/health-professionals/fat-content-breastmilk-faqs/ A main benefit of breastmilk over formula is the antibodies and you’ll still be getting lots of those! I’ve also read that it’s easier for babies to absorb nutrients from breastmilk, which again you’re going to be getting regardless of fat content. So I wouldn’t worry about it, unless your baby seems really hungry or starts losing weight ♥️
@Rhiannon thanks. Bub is fine and no changes to his eating or nappies. I guess I was more curious than anything.
I started doing 3 pumps a day from 3 months and supply maintained xx
@Rabia thanks, mines only dropped 3 or so oz, so I’m happy doing 3 for a while. Did you notice any changes to the milk in those 3 pumps? Mine seems less fatty / more watery.
@Rebecca I didn’t but I also wasn’t looking? I think it should be ok as your body is producing milk for baby with correct amount of fat etc. based on how many weeks post partum you are I THINK. or maybe keep baby on you skin to skin every morning just so body can adjust milk if needed?
Are you breastfeeding to make up for the dropped pumps? Your supply does not regulate until after 3 months so if you are not pumping 8-12 times per day nownow, I would think it would drop and you will need to supplement with formula. Unclear if that’s your plan already though?
