Sleeping baby

My baby will only fall asleep in the nipple while eating. She won’t self soothe if I put her down awake for a nap, she will just cry. How to I change this. I start working from home soon and I’m going to need to put her down at times. It’s going to be so rough 🥺

How old is the baby? They cannot self soothe before roughly 4 months of age.

Newborns cannot self soothe, this is totally normal even though it is hard. The book “Happiest Baby on the Block” helped us a lot, as well as Taking Cara Babies. We do not put our boy down for a nap awake, we rock him to sleep, bounce him, nurse him, etc, and then once he settles we put him down in his swaddle. If he wakes up, we give him a pacifier and rock him until he sleeps again and then put him back in the bassinet.

@Leslie she’s 7 weeks. I didn’t know they can’t self soothe.

@Rachael she only falls asleep on me, no one else I usually feed orrock her to bed and then when I put her down, she wakes up screaming within a few minutes. She won’t go on a swing or bouncer even for a couple minutes. I have to hold her all the time which I love to, and it’s been fine. I’m just worried about when I have to be working. I got one of those baby carriers and I hope that helps. Thanks for the recommendations on the books.

It takes a lotttttt of practice. The only reason we have gotten any sleep is excessive googling, trial and error. Taking Cara Babies has a blog that saves my life daily, I swear. This is a good article. Her sleep schedules and info on preventing over tired babies, helping put babies to sleep, etc, has helped a lot. https://takingcarababies.com/contact-naps?srsltid=AfmBOorc04sp1crLrbMRDKhvpjU1Q3s5fMKROuXDcZyBBlW3JuUMz5jz#how-do-i-stop-contact-naps

@Danielle I had to wear my older 2 boys constantly because they hardly ever slept. Only on me. Happening this time as well with our 3rd. He's 6 weeks old 😫 my ergobaby is our current saving grace but it's killing my back lol

I feel like they can self soothe? But maybe that’s just my perception from my baby. Have you used a baby carrier? My LO loves falling asleep in mine and it helps me get lots of things done / could maybe help you with working from home to keep your hands free! I also love my baby bouncer for naps while I’m busy.

@Amanda babies should not sleep in a bouncer. They're more at risk for positional asphyxiation that way. It's not safe sleep.

Have you tried getting a swing or a rocker? My baby would never fall asleep without being on the nipple for a good month and we slowly started pulling away from that. The first week was rough but now she only does it once a week maybe, the rest of the time I put her in her swing during the day and swaddle her at night and she’s pretty good at going to sleep on her own now

@Leslie I didn’t know that thanks for the info! I’ve always been right next to hear doing chores if she does snooze in her bouncer. But definitely something to keep in mind and will be trying to transfer her to my carrier going forward for naps while around the house!
