Expectations and lots of venting

How are other parents coping with the never ending drag of their newborn preemie being in hospital. I consider myself fortunate that my 34 weeker was born a good weight and relatively well. She's overcome a lot so far but we keep being set back by reflux that hasn't yet responded to treatment. They keep saying "give it time she'll grow out of it" but it's been almost 4 weeks. I'm so tired of travelling to and from the hospital constantly to see her. I want to walk around with her in my arms but we're restricted by her oxygen saturation monitor and oxygen tubes. They've tried so much to get the reflux to settle down, they say she doesn't really need the oxygen but it helps when the reflux causes her to strain. I just wish there was an end in sight and I could bring her home and start our lives together.

I’d say count your blessings that she’s at that stage, my LO was born at 26weeks and needs support breathing, I say everyday is a day closer to being healthily discharged.

@Kristal I do try to, I know compared to other parents this isn't anywhere near as hard as it could be. I'll keep trying to think that every day is a day closer to home. These days seem to take so long but I'm grateful she's safe and well cared for. I just wish I was out the other side of this

My little one was born at 28+6 and spent 86 days in the nicu. We managed to get her reflux under control with gaviscon and omeprazole which we are still giving her now (she was born end of may and came home the week after her due date in august) We also came home on oxygen so we still have the restraints of that at home and out and about, but it far out weighs anything having her home! It gets better i promise! X

@Meg is it an oxygen bottle/can that is used or a machine? I'd love to take her outside once we're home and ready to do so. She's already taking omeprazole but her doctor said they don't like gaviscon for babies as it can cause constipation and they don't want to give her more problems. When they put her on omeprazole I assumed it would fix the problem for her and when it hasn't I feel frustrated that nothing seems to be helping my little one. Thank you for saying it gets better, I'll keep being strong for her

So we have tanks for both travel and at home. We have smaller ones that can be put in their own bag which we use to take her out with (depending on your hospital and the supplier will depend on the size of the tanks etc -but we dont pay for anything and we get nasal canulas to allow us to change them as well) I must admit i was the same when she first came home but as the season has changed and its become cold and flu season Ive been more anxious because of the oxygen to take her out! But the plus side is that you dont have a sats machine to have to worry about. And thats so weird because they gave our little one gaviscon before they even thought about omeprazole! Granted it can block them up a bit but the formula shes on also does that (obviously not sure if your bf or formula) if anything because i can mix the gaviscon with her milk i find it easier to give to her than the omeprazole as she hates it and gets so distressed when i have to give it to her! Stay strong🫶🏼

I’m with you on that, I definitely having a well deserved drink when I’m no longer expressing. And when discharged a well deserved drink as well!!

It does get better my little born at 32 weeks struggle with reflux too we are on gaviscon and infatcol and seems to working so far we also switched to the mam bottles
