Bad latch

In an effort to make a not so great latch better I’ve made it worse. Baby is 3 weeks and tried flipple technique and sandwich the breast tissue to get more in the mouth but now I’m ending up sore and lipstick shaped nipples. Can’t even remember what i was doing before this to just go back. This is the second baby I’m breastfeeding so not my first rodeo. I don’t think there’s a tongue tie. Going to a local group on Tuesday. Any advice in the meantime?

Lipstick shaped nipples are usually quite a strong indicator of a tongue tie! Posterior ones can be harder to pick up on and the testing for it is on oral function not just sight. Might be worth a check! Lucy Webber is a great resource on Instagram and has some latch positioning advice which could help you before you go to group, but going to group is a really great idea. Make sure you’re putting nipple balm on after every feed for yourself x

Thank you. My little girl had posterior tongue tie which we had snipped. But the lipstick shaped nipple is new the past 2 days, this never happened previously with my baby boy when I was feeding him. I queried posterior tongue tie with him at the hospital and since with midwives but they’ve all said they didn’t think so because of the range of motion his tongue has. They also assured me they were trained in diagnosing this. I will query it in the group and there is a group at a local hospital I could attend Friday also - they are meant to be good and diagnosed my little girl years ago.

@Jenny it sounds like you’re getting lots of support! My little boy has terrible tongue function with his posterior tongue tie and even when it was snipped it took ages to get him to latch properly, but can all come in time and with support. Hopefully you get it sorted!x
