Milk drying up

I have EBF for 3 months. My little and I have been sick for over a week, I’ve taken her to the pediatrician twice and they are saying it’s just a cold. I noticed on Friday that I wasn’t making as much milk as usual and today I’m barely making any. I’ve pumped twice today and got less than one ounce from both sides. I am on progesterone BC and took a test yesterday, I’m not pregnant. Should I call my OB or Lac consultant? I just don’t know what’s going on.

Where are you located? Do you need some breast milk to hold you over till you can figure out what's going on?

@Destinee I’m in KY, I’ve posted to a couple but/sell groups on FB. I have formula but I’ve never given it to her before. This is just crazy and I feel flustered!

I feel for you. I'm from Missouri. You might also check to see if you have any local milk banks nearby

I don't know if you're taking any cold medicine, but I think that can affect supply a little bit, I took some the other day and I lost a few ounces

Def call a lactation consultant, or find a La Leche League chapter near you ❤️ Progesterone is an essential hormone in early pregnancy, so taking it artificially tricks your body into thinking you’re in your luteal phase/early pregnancy, which prevents ovulation. Usually that doesn’t affect milk supply. (Many women can breastfeed even during pregnancy, so it wouldn’t matter.) HOWEVER Many women (not all) experience a dramatic milk drop in early pregnancy, myself included. Maybe you’re one of those women, so tricking your body into thinking its pregnant would cause the milk drop 🤷🏻‍♀️ For sure check with an expert though 🫶🏼

How long do you pump? In your situation I would be doing as many 30 minute sessions as I could for a few days, but that's what works for my body and I'm not sure what may work for you. The lactation consultant may be able to help. If you choose to incorporate formula, just don't skip breast removals. Every bottle feed still needs a breast milk removal session or your body will think your baby is eating less and then consequently make less milk.

I’m not an expert so definitely consult a lactation consultant if you’re worried, but look up the 3 month breastfeeding crisis! It’s very possible this is what you’re experiencing. Around this time, your supply regulates and figures out how to just supply for the baby and not have a ton of excess. It’s obviously scary because we now think we’re not supplying enough for our baby, but usually not the case!

My supply dropped every time I was sick with my first. I plan to take supplements as preventative this time. When you are feeling up to it, add an extra punp or 2 to help out and if it's still low you could do a couple power punp sessions.
