Bedtime

Hi, September 2021 be parents. How are you getting on? Just a quick post regarding bedtime. What time do your little ones go to bed? I’m finding that 8 pm is too early as my son will wake up about 4 or 5 am. Ordinarily, this would be good, but it’s too early for him as when is time to get ready for nursery he then wants to sleep. This has probably worsened since the cooks went back if he sleeps after 9:30 pm he will sleep through the night but then getting up in the morning is a problem. I’m now aiming for 9 o’clock but I feel like that’s too late. In my case as well, I have a newborn and her crying in the middle of the night probably disrupt his sleep even further . What’s The working for you guys.

My daughter gets in bed between 7-7.30, and is asleep before 8pm. She wakes up in the night , and also gets up at 7am x

I have two girls that share a room (5&3) They go to bed by 8:00pm usually sleep around 10-10:30 and my 3 year old still wakes up in the night (she always has done she what’s known as a split sleeper). I also have a 4month old so I feel you completely!! It’s not easy but we middle through because if we don’t who will!? 🙃😅 I’m still waiting to find something that works it’s just trial and error here. Good luck and please remember you’re not alone xxxx

We do 7:30/8pm until 7:30/8am, no night wake ups, but also no naps now either. Also have a baby, he's 6 months now and not the best sleeper but thankfully doesn't seem to disturb the eldest, I think my youngest sleep may look a lot different when he is 3🤪 x

My daughter is asleep between 7 and 8,depending on how the evening has gone, as I put my 18 month old down to sleep first. She only wakes if she needs a wee, otherwise sleeps through till 7-8am. Her sleep has been great since dropping her nap just before she turned 2 😊

@Lilita the nap really seems to start having a negative effect on the night time sleep doesn't it!? X

@Sophie oh, definitely, her sleep was awful and she would fight bedtime.. She would not go to sleep till past midnight most nights! Dropped her nap and it all changed, it was like a magic solution for us!

We do 7:30pm usually and 7:30am wake up. No naps no night disturbances usually. I have a 8 week old in the next room and they both have white noise on which I think helps stop her being disturbed by baby's cries. Does your lo still nap as that could be the problem? We leave our 3 year old with books at bedtime and sometimes in the morning she's already up reading them. She reads them at bedtime too until she's ready to sleep. She's normally worn out from nursery but she's there 9-5pm 5 days.

My 3 year old gets in bed at 7 and asleep by 7.30. He wakes between 6/6.30. Is your son napping? Maybe stop that?

My three year old goes bed anywhere between 7 and 8pm and sleeps until 7 ISH in the morning. Issue we have is she sleeps in our room as stopped sleeping in her own bed 🙈

@Naomi same as mine little one x

Mine goes to bed anywhere between 7-8pm, she's usually asleep within 15 minutes and wakes up between 7.30-8am she sleeps in her own bed, but she does shout of me once or twice through the night. Once I've given her a cuddle in bed, she's straight back to sleep 🥰

Our son goes to bed between 8-9pm but will stay awake for ages chatting and singing. Even if he has a really late night he will still wake up between 7.30-8am. He rarely naps now but last week the late nights caught up with him and he had a nap at the childminders, and another evening he fell asleep eating his tea so we put him to bed in his clothes expecting him to wake up soon after but he slept for 14 hours!

9/9:30pm bedtime and sleeps through. It’s been the only thing that’s consistently worked since they were a baby.

Exactly the sand happening here! No nap in the day so he is tired by 7pm but wakes up chatting at 4am if he goes then 😂 I think 8-8:30pm is the best time for us although mornings can still be hard sometimes. We aim to be up by 8. If he naps, bedtime is an absolute disaster. HV said no food or screen time for 2 hours before bed so aim for dinner no later than 6pm x

Thanks all. My son no longer naps but the problem is he’ll be tired about 6 o’clock. My thinking is that an early nap would help him stay awake until it’s bedtime but from your posts dropping the nap completely has worked. But then how do you keep them awake until bedtime?

@Venetia bed time used to be 6pm for my little boy and he would sleep until 6am, we just slowly pushed it back 10 minutes at a time, every couple of nights until it was more 7:30pm x

When he’s at nursery till 6 o’clock, he then wants to sleep as soon as we pick him up it’s then a fight to keep him awake for dinner and a bath

@Sophie this is a good idea!

@Venetia Yes that is difficult! I usually take my sons tablet or something in the car for the quick journey home when I want him to stay awake and then do bedtime routine as soon as we're home, he goes straight down. The screen time doesn't seem to effect anything x
